Before we dive into more complex topics, let’s start with some of the basic household tricks that can help you save money on your energy bill.

Seal Door Gaps

If you can see daylight from under your front door, then heat (and money) are literally slipping through the cracks. It may be time for you to purchase new weatherstripping, or to adjust the threshold beneath your door by adjusting the screw that hold it in place. Whatever method you choose, make sure the bottom of your door is flush with your threshold, but don’t make it too tight of a fit. If the weatherstripping makes closing your door a chore, you’re shortening the life of your weatherstripping.

Let the Sun Do Its Work

Even on a chilly day, sunlight that hits south-facing windows can generate a lot of heat in your home. Use this to your advantage by opening your drapes and blinds, and turning down your thermostat just a little. You’ll save on your energy bill, and your home will feel bright, airy, and comfortable.

Seal Interior and Exterior Gaps

Pipes and cables that enter your home from the outside are often poorly sealed at the threshold, leaving open space where bugs, rodents, and outside air can sneak in. Use some expanding foam to permanently seal up these areas, and prevent vermin and high energy costs from taking over your home.

Install Switch Plate Gaskets

Light switch and outlet plates are an often-overlooked cause of air leakage in the home, as drafts can allow cold air to slip in through the tiny space between the plate and the wall. Luckily, most hardware stores sell outlet and light switch plate foam gaskets that eliminate air leakage to keep your home airtight.

Turn Your Thermostat Down When You’re Not Home

While it’s nice to come home to a perfectly temperature-controlled home, there’s really no reason to spend money heating or cooling your home when nobody is around to enjoy it. Set your thermostat closer to the outside temperature than you normally would, or turn it off during mild weather, and you can save up to 10 percent on your energy bill throughout the year.

Install an Energy Efficient HVAC System

Installing an energy efficient HVAC system with a programmable thermostat is the most effective way to sip on energy, and in turn, save loads of money. That’s where Aircor can help. We have certified experts who can help you choose the right HVAC system for your home and your budget, and make sure that your HVAC system is running smoothly all year, every year.
